The United States is a monster when it comes to its appetite for prescription drugs! And while we are beginning to see their devastating effects on our health, too often we don’t consider their effects on the environment, especially since drug companies have been dumping their pharmaceuticals into the sewer systems across our country for years. Many of these drugs make their way back into our drinking water. You would think that wastewater treatment plants would remove the pharmaceuticals in water along with the other contaminants, but this is not the case. A government study found drugs are still detectable after the water had been treated.
