Imagine walking through the baby food aisle of your local grocery store. The packaging is cheerful. The labels promise wholesome fruits and vegetables. The brands feel trustworthy. But a new study published this month in the journal Nutrients tells a very different story, one that every parent and grandparent needs to hear.
Researchers from the George Institute for Global Health and the University of North Carolina examined 651 commercially produced baby food products sold across the top 10 US grocery chains. Their findings are sobering: 71% of those products qualify as ultra-processed foods (UPFs) under the internationally recognized Nova classification system. These are not the simple, whole-food purees many parents assume they are buying. They are industrially formulated products loaded with additives, processed sugars, and ingredients that have no place in a home kitchen (Dunford et al., 2026).
What Makes a Food “Ultra-Processed”?
The Nova classification system, developed by researchers at the University of São Paulo and now used by the World Health Organization, divides foods into four groups based on the extent of industrial processing. The fourth and most concerning group, ultra-processed foods, is defined by the presence of substances you would never find in a home kitchen, such as high-fructose corn syrup, maltodextrin, hydrolyzed proteins, modified oils, and soy protein isolates (Monteiro et al., 2019).
Beyond these industrial ingredients, UPFs are also characterized by specific additive classes that serve cosmetic purposes. These include flavor enhancers, emulsifiers, thickeners, colors, glazing agents, and sweeteners. Their purpose is not to nourish. Their purpose is to make products look better, taste more appealing, and last longer on the shelf.
In this study, additives were found in 71% of all baby food products examined. Flavor enhancers appeared in 36% of products, thickeners in 29%, emulsifiers in 19%, and artificial or added colors in 19%. Some individual products contained as many as 12 separate UPF-marker additives. Think about that for a moment: a food designed for a six-month-old baby, containing a dozen industrial additives.
The Numbers That Should Alarm Every Parent
The study found that ingredient counts in commercial baby foods ranged from 1 to 56 per product, with an average of 9. Snack foods for toddlers were the worst offenders, averaging 16 ingredients and containing up to 43. Savory meal products that included cheese (but no named protein source) averaged a staggering 31 ingredients, with some containing 56 distinct ingredients.
Every single dry cereal and starch product (100%) was classified as ultra-processed. Snacks and finger foods accounted for 86%. Even fruit and vegetable purees, the products most parents consider the safest and simplest choices, were classified as ultra-processed 71% of the time.
Perhaps most concerning of all: added sugars were found exclusively in UPF products. Not a single non-UPF baby food product in the study contained added sugars. This tells us something important. Ultra-processing and exposure to added sugar go hand in hand in infancy.
Why This Matters for Your Child’s Long-Term Health
The complementary feeding window, roughly 6 to 36 months of age, is one of the most critical periods in human development. During this time, children are not just growing physically. They are developing taste preferences, gut microbiome composition, and metabolic patterns that will persist for the rest of their lives. Research has clearly demonstrated that dietary habits formed in early childhood tend to persist into adolescence and adulthood (Skinner et al., 2002; Nicklaus et al., 2004).
Early and repeated exposure to sweet, salty, and artificially enhanced flavors trains a child’s palate to prefer those tastes. When flavor enhancers, added sugars, and sodium dominate the foods a baby eats during this formative period, the child develops a biological preference for highly processed foods. That preference becomes a lifelong dietary pattern, and with it comes a lifelong elevation in risk for obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer.
The science on UPFs and health outcomes in adults is now overwhelming. Multiple large-scale meta-analyses have linked UPF consumption with increased risk of obesity, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, certain cancers, depression, irritable bowel syndrome, and premature all-cause mortality (Lane et al., 2024; Fang et al., 2024). In children specifically, UPF consumption has been associated with cardio-metabolic conditions, and longitudinal studies have demonstrated a clear positive association between UPF intake and childhood obesity (Costa et al., 2019; Khoury et al., 2024).
What These Additives Are Actually Doing Inside Your Child’s Body
The concern here goes beyond empty calories. Emerging research suggests that specific classes of additives commonly found in baby foods may have direct biological effects that are particularly concerning in young children.
Emulsifiers, found in 19% of the baby food products studied, have been linked in experimental research to alterations in gut microbiota composition and intestinal barrier function. The gut lining in infants is still developing and is far more permeable than in adults. Disruption of that barrier can trigger inflammatory pathways with downstream consequences for metabolic health (Bancil et al., 2020).
Synthetic color additives, also found in 19% of products, have been associated with behavioral outcomes in children, including effects on attention and activity levels (Trasande et al., 2018). Thickeners and stabilizers, while legally permitted, are now under scrutiny based on animal and mechanistic studies suggesting impacts on gut barrier function and inflammatory signaling (Rinninella et al., 2020).
Infants and toddlers have uniquely vulnerable gut physiology. Their intestinal barrier is still maturing. Their microbiome is still colonizing. Their immune system is still calibrating. Exposing these developing systems to a cocktail of industrial additives, day after day, meal after meal, is an experiment we are running on an entire generation of children without fully understanding the consequences.
The “Fruit” on the Label Is Not What You Think
One of the study’s most revealing findings involves the distinction between fresh and processed fruit ingredients. The researchers identified 45 different processed fruit ingredients used in commercial baby foods, compared to only 21 fresh fruit ingredients. Fruit juice concentrates and puree concentrates were widely used across products.
Here is why this matters: concentrated fruit ingredients deliver a heavy dose of sugar with minimal fiber, and they function metabolically almost identically to added sugars. Yet under current FDA labeling rules, many of these concentrated fruit ingredients do not meet the regulatory definition of “added sugars.” This means a product can contain significant amounts of concentrated fruit sugar, behave like a high-sugar food in a child’s body, and still carry a label that reads “no added sugars.”
The UPF products in the study had dramatically higher mean levels of total sugar (14.0 g/100g vs. 7.3 g/100g), added sugar, sodium (70 mg/100g vs. 41 mg/100g), and energy density than non-UPF products. In snack and finger foods, UPF products contained nearly three times the sugar of non-UPF alternatives (14.4 g/100g vs. 5.6 g/100g). These differences were statistically significant.
The US Is Falling Behind the Rest of the World
While the United States has no regulations specifically addressing levels of processing or restricting the use of functional additives in baby foods, other countries and international bodies are taking action. Brazil’s Dietary Guidelines for Children Under Two explicitly advise caregivers to avoid offering ultra-processed foods to children under two years of age. The European Union imposes stricter additive standards for foods marketed to infants and young children, particularly regarding colors and flavorings.
The World Health Organization and UNICEF have cautioned against marketing infant and toddler foods that contain added sugars, high sodium, or ingredients designed to enhance sweet taste, color, or texture. The current US regulatory framework does not even differentiate between additive categories that signal ultra-processing and those used for food safety. Parents browsing the baby food aisle have no meaningful regulatory guidance to help them distinguish genuinely wholesome products from industrially formulated ones.
The study’s authors note that US baby food products appear to use more UPF additives and have a greater proportion classified as ultra-processed than products reported in European and Southeast Asian markets. In Southeast Asia, only 57% of dry cereals and starches were classified as UPFs, compared to 100% in the US.
What You Can Do Starting Today
The good news is that you are not powerless. Knowledge is the first step, and awareness of this reality gives you an enormous advantage in protecting your child or grandchild. Here are practical steps you can take right now:
Read ingredient lists, not just nutrition labels. If you see words like maltodextrin, modified starch, fruit juice concentrate, natural flavors, or any ingredient you would not use in your own kitchen, that product is ultra-processed. The fewer ingredients, the better. The study found that 1% of products contained just a single ingredient, and those were the cleanest options available.
Prioritize homemade when possible. Steamed vegetables, mashed fruits, pureed meats, and simple grain preparations give your child real nutrition without industrial additives. A sweet potato, steamed and mashed, delivers fiber, beta-carotene, and potassium with zero additives. No pouch can match that.
Be especially cautious with snack foods and toddler puffs. These categories had the highest rates of ultra-processing (86%) and the most additives per product. Many of these products are marketed as healthy, convenient snacks, but the data tells a very different story.
Choose pouches and jars with the shortest ingredient lists. While pouches as a category were 73% ultra-processed, they also had the fewest average ingredients (7), meaning the cleanest options tend to live in this format. Look for products with just two or three recognizable whole foods and nothing else.
Advocate for change. Support efforts to improve labeling standards, restrict additive use in baby foods, and align US regulations with international guidelines. The health of our youngest and most vulnerable citizens should not be an afterthought in food policy.
The Bigger Picture
We live in an era when we know more about nutrition, gut health, and metabolic programming than at any point in human history. Yet the commercial food environment surrounding our infants has never been more industrialized, more additive-laden, or more disconnected from whole foods. This study pulls back the curtain on an industry that has prioritized shelf life, sensory appeal, and profit margins over the developmental needs of the children it claims to serve.
Our children are not test subjects for industrial food science. Their developing bodies deserve better than 56-ingredient meals and flavor-enhanced puffs. Every meal in the first three years of life is an investment in the decades that follow. Make those investments count.
As a physician who has spent years studying how nutrition shapes long-term health outcomes, I believe this research represents a call to action for parents, pediatricians, and policymakers alike. The choices we make for our children at six months, twelve months, and twenty-four months echo across a lifetime. Let us make those choices with open eyes.
