When You Eat May Matter for How You Think

New research from Rutgers suggests that narrowing your daily eating window improves memory and problem-solving in older women, and not because of the weight they lost.

If you’ve heard of time-restricted eating, you’ve probably heard it framed as a weight-loss trick: squeeze all your meals into an eight- or nine-hour window, skip the late-night snacking, and the pounds take care of themselves.

A study presented at NUTRITION 2026 suggests the more interesting story might be happening above the neck. Researchers at Rutgers University followed 47 postmenopausal women for six months and found that those who compressed their eating window showed measurable improvements in spatial planning and problem-solving, while the women who cut the same number of calories on a normal schedule did not. Both groups lost roughly the same amount of weight. Only one group got sharper.

The setup

The trial, led by PhD candidate Brandon D. McGuire and senior author Sue A. Shapses, PhD, RD, was designed to untangle two things that are often linked.

The problem is this: eating in a narrow window tends to make people eat less. And losing weight on its own is already known to improve cognition. So when a time-restricted eating study reports better thinking, you can’t tell whether the clock did the work or the scale did.

So the Rutgers team put everyone on a diet. All 47 women, ages 50 to 79 and all with a BMI of 25 or higher, were counseled to cut about 500 calories a day. Then they were randomized. Twenty-six were also asked to pick an eating window of nine hours or less. The other 21 ate on their usual schedule.

The women started out grazing over a 12.3-hour day, which is fairly typical; most Americans spread their food over more than 12 hours. The restricted group pulled that down to 8.2 hours and held it. The comparison group stayed put at 12.6. That’s a real, sustained behavioral difference over six months, which is harder to pull off than it sounds.

At the start and again at week 24, everyone worked through the Cambridge Neuropsychological Battery, a set of tablet-based tasks that measure memory and learning, executive function, and reaction time. Sleep quality was tracked separately with a standard questionnaire.

What changed

Both groups lost weight, about the same amount: 7.5 kg in the time-restricted group versus 6.1 kg in the calorie-restriction-only group, a difference that wasn’t statistically meaningful. Sleep quality didn’t budge in either group.

The cognitive results split.

On the Stockings of Cambridge task, a spatial planning puzzle where you rearrange colored balls to match a target pattern in as few moves as possible, the time-restricted group improved over six months. The calorie-only group didn’t. And the two groups differed from each other, which is the comparison that matters most.

On a paired-associate learning task, which tests visual memory by asking you to remember which pattern appeared in which location, total errors dropped in the time-restricted group. The calorie-only group showed no change. Here the between-group difference didn’t reach significance, so this one is suggestive rather than settled.

Reaction time and a multitasking test showed no differences between the groups.

Then there’s the finding that ties it together: the more a woman shrank her eating window, the more her planning and memory scores improved. That dose-response relationship held after adjusting for other factors, and it’s the kind of pattern that’s hard to explain away as noise.

Why the timing might matter

The working theory involves circadian rhythms, the roughly 24-hour internal clocks that coordinate your biology with the light-dark cycle. Meal timing is one of the strongest signals those clocks listen to, alongside light itself. Eating across a 12-plus-hour day sends a muddled signal. Consolidating food into a shorter window sends a cleaner one.

What that cleaner signal actually does to a brain is the open question. The Rutgers team is explicit that mechanistic work is still needed, and they’re right to be. Right now we have an association between a behavior and a test score, plus a plausible biological story connecting them.

What to do with this

Some honest caveats. Forty-seven women is a small study. All of them were postmenopausal and carrying extra weight, so the results may not transfer to men, to younger women, or to people at a healthy weight. It’s a conference abstract, which means it hasn’t yet gone through full peer review. And better scores on a tablet task are not the same thing as noticing you’re sharper at work. Nobody has shown that connection yet.

What’s genuinely useful here is narrower and more solid than the headline version: in this group of women, shortening the eating window produced cognitive gains that cutting calories alone did not. The weight loss was matched. The timing was the variable that differed.

If you were already thinking about trying time-restricted eating, this is a reason to think the clock might be doing something on its own, not just serving as a convenient way to eat less. If you have diabetes, take medication with food, or have a history of disordered eating, talk to your doctor before compressing your eating window.

And if you just want the low-effort version: stop eating earlier in the evening. That’s most of what these women did.
