Research may have just found the answer to that age-old question. A recent study conducted at Florida State University and published in the journal Psychological Science, found that having sex with your partner induces a 48-hour, hormone-induced “afterglow” which helps people feel content in their relationship.
The researchers found that the feelings of intimacy and contentment lasts for two days and fade after three. It is known that sex plays a key role in bonding due to the release of the “cuddle hormone” oxytocin. Until now, it was unknown how long the warm and fuzzy effect of oxytocin lingered after sex.
The research showed that sexual satisfaction remained elevated for 48 hours after sex. People with a stronger sexual afterglow were more likely to be happier in their marriages. Interestingly, the afterglow appears to last the same length of time it takes for sperm concentration to be restored.
Both men and women are wired to experience an oxytocin surge (or several) during moments of bonding with each other or with their children. Oxytocin naturally enhances a sense of optimism, happiness, trust, and self-esteem. Oxytocin has been found to benefit more than just the mind, however. When oxytocin levels are elevated, it can reduce blood pressure, and has been found to reduce gut inflammation, food sensitivities, autoimmune disorders, and help the body fight infection. In cases where the body cannot make oxytocin, such as with PTSD and autism, oxytocin can be administered as a nasal spray.
