I represent a rare but growing breed of doctors redirecting our healthcare system towards treatments that tackle the REAL causes of premature aging and chronic disease. As one of the top minds in the fields of metabolic and nutritional medicine, I have the wisdom and experience of an older doctor, and the passion and up-to-date knowledge of a newer doctor. I’ve been in practice for over 30 years and have the right academic credentials, scientific expertise, and advanced clinical skills needed to prevent and reverse disease, slow the aging process, and profoundly improve quality of life.
I earned my medical degree from Des Moines University and served my hospital internship at Northwest General Hospital in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Because learning only begins in medical school, I didn’t stop there. In addition to a medical degree, I earned a post-doctoral Master of Science degree in Metabolic and Nutritional Medicine from the University of South Florida College of Medicine. This advanced degree provided a deeper understanding of cellular biochemistry and human physiology than was taught in medical school. It gave me a greater appreciation of the intimate connections between chronic disease, metabolic dysfunction, and faulty nutrition. In addition, it allowed me to offer a higher level of care, and gave me the practical knowledge on how to use the science of metabolic and nutritional medicine to improve health, reduce the effects of aging, and increase lifespan. Out of the 900,000 physicians in the United States, less than 0.01% have this important and cutting-edge degree.
In addition to a Master’s degree, I have a post-doctoral Graduate Certificate in Metabolic Endocrinology and another in Brain Fitness & Memory Management—both from the University of South Florida College of Medicine. This was followed by a Fellowship in Integrative Cancer Therapeutics with the Metabolic Medical Institute. I also have a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry from Andrews University and a Certificate in Plant-Based Nutrition from Cornell University. I am a recipient of the Physician’s Recognition Award from the American Medical Association, a Certified Personal Trainer with the American College of Sports Medicine, and a member of the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine.
In my clinical practice, I see patients 3-4 days per week. I spend the other days poring over medical journals and researching medical articles, reading medical books, listening to lectures, or attending scientific conferences. I am committed to staying abreast of the latest medical findings that can be used to improve the health and well-being of my patients.
To be a good messenger, one has to live the message. As a doctor, all of my credentials would be meaningless if I did not live the message. Because my health is important to me, and because I wish to set a good example to others, I practice what I preach. In spite of poor genetics, the profound mental clarity and physical energy I enjoy is a direct result of the same program I utilize for my patients. While many men my age are starting to fall apart, mentally and physically, I am healthier and in better shape than most men half my age.
My medical expertise has been enhanced as a result of working alongside with my wife, Dr. Sylvia Torres-Thomas, PhD, RN. It’s just her and I, husband and wife, doctor and nurse, taking really good care of you or your loved one. Dr. Torres-Thomas is a seasoned registered nurse and a published clinical researcher with over 30 years of experience. She earned her Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) in Nursing from the University of Central Florida (less than 1% of nurses have a PhD). While there, she received the prestigious Order of Pegasus award. Dr. Torres-Thomas was also chosen as a Rising Star of Scholarship and Research at the International Nursing Research Congress in 2015. She is an adjunct Associate Professor of Nursing at Herzing University in Orlando.
