A common bacteria linked to peptic ulcers may also be responsible for an irregular heart rhythm known as atrial fibrillation. A strong association has been found with between the bacteria Helicobacter pylori and an increased risk of developing atrial fibrillation. This heart disorder affects over 2 million Americans. The heart’s two upper chambers (the atria) quiver or flutter instead of beating and pumping effectively. This can cause the blood to pool and form clots. If a blood clot leaves the heart, it can travel to the brain and cause a fatal or debilitating stroke.
Comments: If you have atrial fibrillation, you should have your doctor check for the presence of Helicobacter pylori and eradicate it immediately if it is found.
