Heartburn drugs linked to kidney damage

Long-term use of common prescription and over-the-counter PPI (proton-pump inhibitor) heartburn drugs have been found to cause severe kidney damage. This includes drugs like Prevacid (lansoprazole), Nexium (esomeprazole), and Prilosec (esomeprazole).

Intended to ease the symptoms of acid reflux, over 15 million Americans take prescription PPIs, and millions more take over-the-counter PPIs. In a recent study published in Kidney International, researchers at Washington University School of Medicine found that these drugs can lead to kidney damage severe enough to necessitate dialysis or a kidney transplant.

COMMENTS: The damage from PPIs isn’t limited to the kidneys. PPIs can cause deficiencies of vitamin B12, magnesium, and calcium. The use of PPIs is also associated with obesity, hypertension, pneumonia, C. difficile infections, and dementia. Fortunately, there are effective, natural solutions for acid reflux. If your doctor is unable or unwilling to provide such solutions, we can help.
