Wake-Up Call: Too Much Caffeine Might Hurt Your Heart

Many of us can’t imagine starting our day without a cup of coffee or tea. But a new study suggests that overdoing it on caffeine could be bad for your heart.

Researchers in India found that drinking more than 400 mg of caffeine daily (about 4 cups of coffee) might increase one’s risk of heart problems, even if one is otherwise healthy. They’re presenting their findings at the upcoming 2024 American College of Cardiology’s Asia conference in Delhi, India. This presentation highlights the growing interest in how everyday habits, like caffeine consumption, can impact long-term heart health.

Dr. Nency Kagathara, who led the study, explains that too much caffeine can affect your body’s natural “rest and digest” system. Over time, this can lead to higher blood pressure and a faster heart rate.

The study examined 92 healthy adults aged 18-45 and measured how quickly their hearts and blood pressure returned to normal after a simple exercise test. Those who regularly consumed a lot of caffeine (from coffee, tea, sodas, or energy drinks) took longer to recover.

High blood pressure is a serious concern. It can lead to heart disease, kidney problems, and even dementia if left unchecked. While caffeine isn’t the only cause, it’s something you can control. Also, other factors like smoking, alcohol, diet, and family history affect your heart health.
