Stretching is a natural activity. People instinctively stretch after waking from sleep or after long periods of inactivity. As a form of exercise, stretching involves elongating muscles to their fullest length. There are several benefits of stretching, and stretching needs to be a regular part of your fitness routine.
Stretching increases flexibility. Stretching improves circulation by increasing blood flow to the muscles. Stretching can eliminate low back pain. Stretching can lower blood pressure and improve arterial function. Stretching feels good and is relaxing.
Stretching needs to be performed properly to be beneficial. Here are some stretching tips that will help ensure that you are doing it properly:
- Stretching should be performed a minimum of three days per week in order to improve and maintain flexibility.
- Hold each stretch for 15-30 seconds.
- Never force a stretch beyond the point of mild tension. You should not feel pain when stretching.
- Never bounce when stretching. Stretching should always be fluid and gentle.
- Don’t hold your breath. Breathe slowly and easily when stretching.
