Growing evidence indicates that the cholesterol-lowering drugs known as statins, are associated with over 300 adverse side effects, including a weakening of the heart muscle, and an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Recently published research (Diabetes Care, August 8, 2012) now indicates that statin drug use may cause accelerated calcification of the aorta and coronary arteries, both of which can contribute to premature death. This is very concerning given the fact that statins are supposed to reduce cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, and not increase it!
If you are taking a statin drug such as Lipitor, under no circumstances should you suddenly stop taking the medication. Be sure to talk to your doctor about this.
