Heartburn drug warning

If you have heartburn (also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease of GERD) and are taking a proton pump inhibitor (PPI), a new study has found these medicines can increase the risk of Alzheimer’s disease by a whopping 44%. The list of serious potential side effects doesn’t stop at Alzheimer’s. PPI’s have been linked to a nearly 50% increased risk of kidney disease.

It used to be that PPI’s were available by prescription only. With the advent of over-the-counter Nexium—also known as the “purple pill”—consumers can now take this medication without the oversight of a medical professional. This increases the risk of harm.

Comments: The standard American diet (SAD) is often to blame for GERD. To reduce your risk, it’s crucial to look at the food you eat. Avoid processed foods, and eat fresh, organic food as much as possible. Eat smaller portion sizes and chew your food well. When hungry between meals, snack on veggies and low-glycemic fruits. Of course, it’s a good idea to find a doctor that understands the power of nutrition.
